Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about searching, listing, applying, and paying rent on RentConnect.

For tenants
How do I search for a property?

Use the search page to filter by county, sub-county, property type, listing type (for rent or for sale), price range, and number of bedrooms and bathrooms. Results only show verified, published listings.

Can I save a search and get notified of new matches?

Yes. Save a search with your chosen filters and you’ll get notified when a new listing matches it, so you don’t need to keep checking manually.

How do I contact a landlord?

Open any listing and select “Contact Landlord” to start a direct, in-app conversation. You’ll need to be logged in with a tenant account.

How do I apply for a listing?

From a listing page, select “Apply Now” to submit a rental application, including any supporting documents the landlord requests. You can track the status of every application you’ve submitted from your account.

How do I pay rent through the platform?

Once your application is approved, you can pay rent directly via M-Pesa from your account. You’ll receive an STK push prompt on your phone to confirm the payment.

If the M-Pesa prompt doesn’t go through for any reason, you can instead upload a screenshot of your payment as proof — your landlord reviews and confirms it, and you’ll get a notification either way.

Will I get reminded when rent is due?

Yes. Once your landlord has generated your lease, you’ll automatically get a reminder a few days before your rent is due, and a follow-up reminder if a payment is missed.

Is my payment information safe?

Payments are processed directly through Safaricom’s official M-Pesa Daraja API — RentConnect never sees or stores your M-Pesa PIN. If you pay by uploading proof of payment instead, that screenshot is only visible to your landlord and RentConnect’s admin team, never to other tenants or the public.

Can I request maintenance or report an issue?

Yes. From your tenant portal you can submit a maintenance request or report an issue directly to your landlord, and track its status until it’s resolved.

For landlords
How do I list a property?

Log in with a landlord account and select “List Your Property.” Fill in the property details, location, price, and photos, then publish — your listing goes live immediately.

Can I list both rentals and properties for sale?

Yes — when listing a property, choose “For Rent” or “For Sale” as the listing type. You can also list residential or commercial properties.

How do I review applications and screen tenants?

Applications submitted for your listings appear under “Landlord Applications,” where you can review applicant details, request tenant screening information, and approve or reject each application.

How do I receive rent payments, and track who’s paid?

Tenant rent payments — whether by M-Pesa or uploaded proof of payment — appear automatically in your Payment History, with receipts for every transaction.

Your Rent Arrears Dashboard also shows every active tenancy at a glance, including which tenants are current and which are overdue, with the total amount outstanding.

Can I add agents or team members to help manage my listings?

Yes. From your dashboard you can invite team members by email and assign them a role, so an agent can help manage applications and messaging on your behalf.

What does it cost to list a property?

Listing a property on RentConnect is currently free. Featured placements to boost a listing’s visibility are coming soon.

Account & trust
How do I know a listing is legitimate?

Every landlord on RentConnect must be verified before they can list a property — this means submitting a government ID and proof of ownership or management, which our team reviews before their account is approved to list.

As with any online marketplace, we still recommend ordinary caution: view a property in person before committing, keep communication within the platform’s messaging, and never send money outside the app.

Who do I contact if I have a problem?
